Navigate the Cost of Living in the UK

  • Accommodation

The cost of housing varies depending on your location within the UK. Major cities like London generally have higher rents. On average, you can expect to spend around £600 to £800 per month on accommodation. Consider options such as university residencies, shared apartments, or homestays.

  • Food & Groceries

Grocery shopping and cooking at home can be cost-effective. Budget around £30 to £50 per week for groceries. Dining out occasionally is enjoyable but can add to your expenses, so manage this wisely.

  • Travel & Commuting

The UK has an extensive public transportation network, including buses and trains. Invest in an Oyster card in London or regional travel passes based on your location. Weekly transport costs can range from £20 to £40.

  • Healthcare

International students in the UK usually have access to the National Health Service (NHS). However, you may still need health insurance for services not covered by the NHS.

  • Entertainment

The UK offers a vibrant cultural scene with various entertainment options. Allocate a budget of around £40 to £80 per week for leisure activities, including movies, dining out, and exploring local events.

  • Working Part-time

Many international students work part-time to support their studies. The UK has a national minimum wage, which provides opportunities for employment. Veritas Mundi Education will help you understand your student visa's work restrictions before seeking employment.

Navigate Student Visa Application

  • CAS: Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies

Before applying for a UK Student Visa, you must secure admission to a recognised UK educational institution and obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). This document is essential and contains vital information about your course, your institution, and your personal details.

  • English Language Proficiency

To study in the UK, you will need to demonstrate your English language proficiency. Most institutions require a certain level of English language skills, which you can prove by taking internationally recognised exams such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE.

  • The Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) Certificate

Some international students may need to obtain an ATAS Certificate. This requirement applies to all international students and researchers (apart from exempt nationalities) who are subject to UK immigration control and intend to study or research at the postgraduate level in certain sensitive subjects.

  • Financial Requirements

You will need to prove that you have enough funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses while studying in the UK. The exact amount varies based on your location – for programmes in London you will need £1,334 per month (for up to 9 months) and for courses outside of London you will need £1,023 per month (for up to 9 months). You must have this money for at least 28 consecutive days in your or your parent’s account.

  • Tuberculosis (TB) Testing

If you come from a country where TB is prevalent, you may be required to undergo a TB test as part of your visa application.

  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

As part of your student visa application, you will need to pay the healthcare surcharge. The amount you pay depends on the length of your visa and your individual circumstances. This payment provides you with access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS) during your stay.
